SPLASH! Poems of Our Watery World

   Ocean Rhythms
Wave after wave
each wave
a beat
each beat
repeating
each stretch
receding.
This is Earth’s
old wild heart
beating.

A TREE PLACE and Other Poems

   Volcano
If you were a volcano
asleep in the same spot
for a hundred years,
with old anger
rumbling and burning
your insides

wouldn’t you awake
screaming with fire,
spitting rocks and ashes,
throwing a flaming fit
not caring who or what
you hit?

WHEN WHALES EXHALE and Other Poems

   WHEN WHALES EXHALE
There’s a horn sound
from the blowhole
and a high-speed spout
when a whale at sea
blasts the old air out.
It breathes up a geyser,
a flare of fizz,
a white cloud that shows you
where it is
in the endless waves
of the great green sea.
Oh, whales exhale
magnificently!
